With this combination of water resources, Sebring Area water quality often faces our share of water filtration and treatment issues:
Surface water, like rivers and snow melt, absorb contaminants that can be harmful for consumption as well as annoying around the home. Most of these contaminants include naturally occurring bio materials and minerals. This means water quality can worsen seasonally when warming temperatures contribute to algal blooms, or heighten water sensitivity to microorganism growth.
Ground water presents its own treatment challenges and filtration issues, so Sebring Area residents with primarily ground water service may see different water problems than those using water from Sebring Area’s surface water sources. Most often, these manifest as hard water problems which cause buildup on faucets and fixtures, and can be hard on appliances and plumbing.
Sebring Area and the surrounding communities, access drinking water from many sources. With such a large population, Florida residents have to rely on combinations of natural and municipal resources to meet the area’s growing water needs.
Water Treatment in Sebring Area
The main source of drinking water comes from the Floridan Aquifer System, a groundwater reservoir that spans approximately 100,000 square miles and extends beneath Florida, Southern Georgia, and small parts of Alabama and South Carolina. Across this expansive area, the city of Sebring strategically placed 14 wells to extract water from this aquifer, which remains protected from direct pollution and contamination due to its subterranean nature. Unlike rivers or reservoirs, our groundwater supply is shielded from exposure to air.
This high-quality groundwater serves as an excellent resource to meet the public health demand for potable water. The 14 wells efficiently draw water from the aquifer, and it undergoes a meticulous treatment process. Initially, the extracted water is pumped to storage facilities where it undergoes chlorination for disinfection purposes. Subsequently, fluoride is introduced to enhance dental health. Finally, we incorporate a phosphate blend named Sequest-All, specifically designed to sequester iron deposits and prevent corrosion in metal piping such as iron, copper, or galvanized lead.
